Sharon Zhang
Sharon Zhang, Chinese yangqin soloist, virtuoso, educator and maestro. She started to learn yangqin at an early age. She has had formal training in music education and has both taught and played music professionally. In 1977 she began her university education majoring in Yangqin. During her studies at university, she appeared in many performances, receiving many creative music awards. She also participated in many films and television music recordings.
After graduation she stayed and lectured at the university taught yangqin. In 1983, she was admitted to Tianjin Conservatory of Music with distinction, under the tutelage of the prominent yangqin master, Prof. Zheng Baoheng. At Zheng’s yangqin work concert in Beijing, Sharon impressed the audience with her performance of “Jiang Nan Hao”.
Since moving to Canada, Sharon has continued to develop the art of the yangqin. She has been active in the Chinese Music scene and is keen to teach others. Her performance was described as “refined, natural, mellow and refreshing”. Her musical style is unique, elegant, and warm.
She has successfully held a yangqin solo concert, and over the years has worked with many prominent musicians. She has performed with Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra, worked with Maria Pomianowska at the Chopin concert at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. Playing as a professional musician has given her the highest level of standards.
Sharon has been frequent assisting Standard Grade Examination in Canada which is organized by Central Conservatory of Music of China. She also established the Chinese Music Center in the Confucius Institute in Edmonton.
Sharon is currently holding private lessons at the VSO School of Music.
