Dr. Charles Barber
Dr. Charles Barber is the Conductor & Artistic Director of the City Opera Vancouver. A student of the legendary conductor Carlos Kleiber, Dr. Barber served in apprenticeship with San Francisco Opera and Metropolitan Opera, and his operatic and concert repertoire numbers some 220 works. Dr. Barber has conducted in Canada and the United States, and on tour in South Korea, Singapore, Japan, Morocco and Spain.
For ten years he served as student and assistant to legendary Los Angeles composer and arranger Marty Paich, and has worked in the popular music realms with artists such as Linda Ronstadt, Carly Simon and Mel Tormé, and also conducted for Stan Getz, Francis Ford Coppola, and Sarah Vaughn. He has been published by Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Greenwood Press, and Carnegie Hall, and authored or co-authored more than 90 entries in New Grove 2000. Dr. Barber served as Music Advisor to the BBC in its award-winning film documentary set, The Art of Conducting.
He has served as producer to Naxos Records, the world’s largest classical company and in 1997, created American Classics, a series that has now over 300 CDs in release. He holds a Bachelor of Music, University of Victoria; Master of Arts, Stanford; and, Doctor of Musical Arts, Stanford.
