VSO School of Music Students Win at BC’s Performing Arts Festival & Canadian Music Competition

The Three Big Guys Trio (AKA Ukiyo Trio)
We would like to congratulate our VSO School of Music students and alumni for some amazing achievements!
Performing Arts BC’s Provincial Festival
- 3 Big Guys Trio (aka Ukiyo Trio, coached by Bogdan Dulu & Hung-Wei Huang), consisting of Timothy Li (violin), Da-Yong Chan (Cello), and Bohan Zhang (Piano), won their Provincials Excellence Chamber Music class. They then moved on to win the Adjudicator Choice Award for Most Outstanding Performance in the Grand Prize Provincials Excellence Winners Concert! 3 Big Guys will now be going to Saskatchewan to represent British Columbia in the Canada West Competition.
- Xenia Huang (student of Carla Birston) won the Senior Strings Solo class.
- Leo Teixeira (voice student of Leah Giselle Field) won the Intermediate Classical Voice Class, received the Honourable Mention in the Intermediate Vocal Variety Class and won the Outstanding Performance of a Canadian Work in the Vocal Variety Class. Leo also studies with Kevin Zakresky (theory), Julian Borkowski (jazz piano) is in a jazz combo coached by Jodi Proznick and was in the Big Band.
- Carl Teng (student of Harold Birston & Henry Shapard) won the Provincials Excellence Strings Solo class.

Canadian Music Competition: BC Chapter
- Astral String Quartet: Da-Wei Chan (violin), Xenia Huang (violin), Emma Sha (viola), and Carl Teng (cello) won 1st Prize in Chamber Music Ensembles (coached by Nicholas Wright).
- Kira Gill (violin), who was part of the Performance Prep Program last year and studied with Yi Zhou, won 1st Prize in Strings.

Both the Astral String Quartet and Kira will be representing British Columbia in the CMC Nationals Finals in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Best of luck to them!
