Emily M Cheung
Artist in Residence
Emily M Cheung is a Canadian soprano recognized for her expressive range and global career. She has performed across five continents under the direction of over 55 renowned conductors, including Tan Dun, Helmut Rilling, Frans Brüggen, Daniel Reuss, and Peter Dijkstra. Some career highlights include a private concert for the Emperor and Empress of Japan in Tokyo, and a critically acclaimed role in the world stage premiere of Otto M. Zykan’s Staatsoperette at the Bregenzer Festspiele in Austria.
Currently based in Vancouver, Emily is a core member of the Vancouver Chamber Choir and the Vancouver Cantata Singers, with frequent collaborations with Early Music Vancouver and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. She is also a founding member of Time Ensemble, an international collective focused on musical outreach and education in underserved communities.
Emily loves being a deviser and performer in innovative interdisciplinary productions and contemporary music, such as Double Happiness: Detour this Way (www.happinesshappiness.ca), a multimedia exploration of Chinese cultural diaspora, and an upcoming recording with Russell Wallace of the Lil’wat Nation and the Salt Chuck City Orchestra. From her home studio, she also contributes to digital and creative projects, including the World Choir for Peace, and a spoken word and vocalization collaboration with Poet Laureate Emeritus of Victoria, Marie Metaphor.
