Philosophy
At the VSO School of Music, we believe piano learning is an enjoyable journey where knowledge meets practical application and skills are built like building blocks, step by step. Our Never Too Late program is designed for adult learners who aspire to learn an instrument and our piano courses offer a systematic learning pathway for adult learners to one day play any music they choose with confidence and independence without relying on quick video tutorials. Instead, you will master the foundational and musicianship skills needed to become a self-reliant and expressive pianist.
Beginners Class
Designed for complete beginners or those with 0-1 years of experience, this level welcomes adult learners age 16 and above with keyboards provided for in class use. Participants will build a good foundation in piano learning through:
- Music reading, rhythm, and pitch recognition
- Chord progressions, fingering, scales, and technical exercises
- Sight reading and ear training
- Keyboard theory and practical fundamentals
- How to establish a consistent and productive practice routine
By the end of this course, students will be able to fluently sight-read short passages of up to eight bars, self-learn a one-page piece of music and accurately assess their own playing for improvement. This level lays a strong foundation for lifelong enjoyment of the piano.
Continuers Class
This level is ideal for those who have completed the Beginners Level, studied piano for one to two years, or already have a basic grasp of fundamentals and are looking to further develop their skills. It is an inclusive and welcoming class that builds upon existing abilities, focusing on:
- Playing expressively with dynamic range and articulations
- Developing refined listening and interpretation skills
- Expanding repertoire across different styles
- Strengthening technique and sight reading
- Building ensemble skills
- Music appreciation
- Weekly practice guidelines
- Opportunity to participate in end of term performance
The course features a strong ensemble component, encouraging students to engage in group projects and collaborative playing each week. In addition to hands-on keyboard work, the class incorporates music appreciation and listening activities to broaden musical understanding and spark continued curiosity and appreciation. A strong sense of community and peer support makes this class both motivating and rewarding for adult learners.
For this level or course, participants will need:
- access to a piano at home
Students enrolled in our keyboard group classes enjoy free access to practice rooms, subject to availability and room booking policy. Learn more about the VSO School Advantage here.
