Join a supportive community of adult pianists in this interactive and encouraging masterclass setting. Designed as a complement to private lessons, this course offers a valuable opportunity to refine your skills, receive professional feedback, and stay inspired through shared musical experiences.
Mentored and guided by our experienced instructor, Dr. Carla Dodek, participants will have the chance to perform for one another in a nurturing environment, with guidance and constructive critique from an experienced instructor. Focus areas include technique, musical structure, interpretation, style, and performance practices. The class also fosters skill development in sight reading (through duet playing), critical listening, and musical analysis, while introducing participants to new and varied repertoire.
This course is ideal for adult pianists who are looking to deepen their musical understanding, gain confidence in performing, and stay motivated through peer encouragement and regular performance opportunities – including the chance to play on the concert grand piano in Pyatt Hall.
Memorization is not required, but pieces should be at a playable level to ensure meaningful feedback and growth.
Recommended for pianists at RCM Grade 8 level and above.
Student Testimonials
Linda T (Fall term 2024 student):
Thank you again for this wonderful opportunity to be a part of your class. Your extraordinary musical knowledge, sensitivity and compassion for your students is truly heartwarming. Your passion to teach and vision of bringing fellow students together to perform, learn and share music together has been very special. You have enriched my musical experience. Thank you, Carla.
Kevin Y (Fall term 2024 student):
Carla’s masterclass enriches one’s playing technique, with technique and performance as the main goals. Additional musicology info was also helpful to understand the music in depth.
Jill S (Fall term 2024 student):
I had never had the experience of participating in a Master Class before, and the combination of performing oneself, and receiving your helpful, thoughtful feedback in a supportive manner, plus being able to listen to others play and listening to the comments and suggestions on their work was most interesting, pleasurable, and informative.
You obviously have great depth of musical knowledge and understanding, and your support and sensitivity for all students made the class feel safe, as well as illuminating. I also enjoyed the opportunity to do some sight reading and play duets. I would recommend this class to anyone who asked.
