Chamber Music Program

The VSO School of Music Chamber Music Program is directed by VSO Concertmaster Nicholas Wright. Students who audition will be matched with students of similar skill and availability, and grouped into small ensembles of 3-5 players. Each ensemble rehearses and performs specially-selected repertoire, and receives weekly coaching from chamber specialists amongst the VSO & School of Music faculty.

Most chamber ensembles have 60min weekly coaching, however some advanced groups may register for 90min weekly coaching, which have a different fee set.

 

VSOSoM Chamber Ensembles Achievements:

Groups from the VSOSoM Chamber Music Program consistently place in local and international competitions and festivals.

  • Astral Quartet | Senior First Prize and Audience Prize winners at the 2024 Friends of Chamber Music’s 69th Young Musicians Competition
  • Updog Trio | First Prize in the 17 and Under Chamber class at the 2023 Canada West Performing Arts Festival, held in Edmonton, AB
  • Three VSOSoM earned prizes for the top chamber in the 2023 BC Provincials:
    • UPdog Trio (Gabrielle Haslett, Sunny Sun, Tony Zhou) placed 2nd in the Intermediate Chamber Group
    • Ukiyo Quartet (Da-Yong Chan, Nevé Koa Frid, Eunjin Veronica Lee, Timothy Jin Seo Li) placed 2nd in the Senior Chamber Group
    • Astral Quartet (Da-Wei Chan, Hilary Chan, Xenia Huang, Carl Elliot Teng) placed 1st in the Provincial Excellence Chamber Group
