“Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy. Music is the electrical soil in which the spirit lives, thinks and invents” – Beethoven
It is impossible to put into words the great revolution that was Ludwig van Beethoven. He and his works changed the way we think about art music in Europe, disrupting almost every notion of melody, form, and genre. His works also changed how we see the composer in society and the function that music plays in our lives. This 12-week term offers a survey of Beethoven’s greatest compositions as well as discussions on how his innovations influenced future composers.
