These are in-person music classes, held at the VSO School of Music
Designed to nurture well-rounded young musicians, this course equips students with foundational skills essential for a long and fulfilling musical journey. A strong foundation is key to successful instrumental learning, making this class an ideal transition from early musical interest to systematic learning, such as group or private lessons. It also serves as an excellent supplement to private lessons, reinforcing core musicianship skills that will accelerate progress and deepen understanding.
Through engaging group activities, students will build their awareness of pitch, rhythm, and expression in music. They will learn to connect these musical elements, develop music literacy, and engage in ear training—all fundamental to instrumental learning. This course encourages young students to explore and enjoy music, helping them develop sensitivity that will enhance their musicianship and expressiveness.
By the end of the course, our budding musicians will be able to do the following:
- Sing pentatonic songs in tune with accurate pitch
- Perform music with a sense of internalized beat
- Sing and recognize solfege syllables
- Connect solfege, rhythm, and note reading on the staff
- Develop a holistic understanding of music literacy
