This an online course, taught using Zoom
Over 4 weekly interactive sessions, let trumpeter, pianist & composer Alan Matheson take you on a virtual tour of inspiring figures, moments and sounds of jazz history. Using audio and video recordings, this Summer Alan will cover two main topic areas:
Weeks 1-2 – Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn: “Beyond Category”
Ellington and Strayhorn, together and separately, composed and arranged a remarkable body of music for one of the greatest ensembles in American music: the Duke Ellington orchestra. These classes will present a number of their most important works, covering almost the entire life-span of the Ellington band. Featured soloists include: Johnny Hodges (alto sax); Harry Carney (baritone sax); Cootie Williams (trumpet) and Alice Babs (vocalist).
Weeks 3-4 – Women Of Jazz: Composers, Arrangers and Instrumentalists
Female musicians have been an essential part of jazz from its beginnings in the late 19th century, contributing in countless ways to the growth of the music. During these classes we will honour the work of composers, arrangers, bandleaders and instrumentalists who helped develop the jazz language in its early days along with contemporary artists who continue the jazz message. Musicians featured include: Lil Hardin; Margie Gibson; Toshiko Akiyoshi; Jutta Hipp; Marian McPartland; Sharon Minemoto and Jen Hodge.
