Registration for this Summer program is now open!
The Summer Vocal Intensive is your chance to take a deeper dive into your vocal technique and performing process through a week of intensive study covering foundational principals of singing. If you are preparing for an important audition or want the benefit of a package of private lesson, group classes, performance opportunities and learning from other colleagues and expert instructors, this intensive will help you achieve your artistic goals. No auditions required, but please note prerequisites below.
This 6-day intensive will include the following:
- “Discover Art Song” with UBC Professor Rena Sharon
- Explore how to make a text powerfully alive in the present moment, to understand how the piano merges with the voice to describe a poem’s multi-layered meanings, and how to bring song’s tapestry of emotions, memories, and gathered wisdom into a state of shared contact with your audience.
- “The Art of Silent Practice” – Maria Jung
- Discover practical ways to learn and practice music without using your voice. This class will focus on developing key musicianship skills that strengthen musical understanding, support efficient practice habits, and help singers feel more confident in their learning process.
- “Acting the Song” – William George
- Unlock the full expressive power of songs, treating lyrics with the same level of detail a monologue would demand. Through acting and movement exercises, you will work to communicate your songs, embody your characters, and enhance the message of the music.
- “Diction for Singers” – Leah Field
- This will serve as an introduction to the International Phonetic Alphabet and help singers apply it to repertoire in foreign languages. We will focus on applying IPA to repertoire in Italian, German, French, and English, though other languages can also be explored. Students will be expected to both speak and sing in front of the group. No previous experience with IPA is required.
- 2 sixty-minute voice lessons with Diane King
- 2 sixty-minute coaching sessions with Maria Jung

- Final Celebration Performance in Pyatt Hall on June 28th
