Young Composers is designed for inquisitive, analytical children who love to ask questions, solve puzzles, and figure out how music is built. Moving beyond listening, campers step into the shoes of true creators to discover the inner workings of melody, rhythm, and harmony. Under the guidance of our experienced faculty – bringing expertise spanning early childhood music education, composition, theory, and jazz – students develop their own personal artistic voice through structured theory, active creation challenges, and guided improvisation.

Throughout the school year, we offer several single-day camps where students tackle thematic composition challenges:
October 23, 2026 – Monsters & Mysteries
The focus: Suspense, texture, and unconventional sound effects.
Young sound-detectives investigate how film and classical composers build tension and mood. Campers experiment with unconventional instrument techniques and vocal textures to design original, story-driven Halloween tracks.
February 12, 2027 – Galaxy Quest: Scoring the Cosmos with Holt
The focus: Timbre, orchestration, and programmatic music.
Blast off into outer space! Inspired by Gustav Holst’s masterwork The Planets, students explore how different musical colors represent planets, rockets, and vast galaxies. Campers use motivic development to translate astronomical ideas into structured musical pieces.
May 7, 2027 – Awakening Earth: Musical Portraits of Spring
The focus: Form, motif, and musical imagery.
Celebrating renewal and growth, students take analytical and creative cues from Antonio Vivaldi’s Spring. Campers examine how classical composers capture the natural world in sound, applying those techniques to compose bright, vibrant pieces celebrating the new season.
