Intermediate Youth Choir (Ages 10–14)
This ensemble offers an inspiring choral experience for young singers ready to grow their musical skills. Under the direction of Kiyomi Hori, students build vocal technique, musicianship, and confident part-singing through engaging repertoire. Singers receive mentorship from members of the Vancouver Chamber Choir and explore rhythmic and contemporary styles through an annual jazz module with Will Clements. As part of the VSO School of Music’s integrated approach, students also collaborate with string ensembles in the Christmas concert, experiencing music-making across disciplines in a vibrant performance setting.
Advanced Youth Choir (Ages 15–18)
For teens seeking an inspiring musical environment, this advanced youth ensemble, under the direction of Helen Leung, offers cross-disciplinary collaboration, mentorship from working artists, along with ambitious repertoire from the Renaissance to contemporary compositions to energetic jazz charts. In addition to a dedicated weekly ensemble conductor, participants will work in smaller breakout groups with tailored instruction from various Vancouver Chamber Choir singers to help build confidence, healthy vocal technique, and develop their vocal flexibility. This ensemble offers quality education on choral literature and discovery of current choral trends. Annual modules with jazz and strings department, and VCC Artistic Director Kari Turunen provide a holistic musical education that connects singers directly with instrumentalists and specialists — a hallmark of the VSO School of Music’s choral program. Performance opportunities include a joint Christmas concert with the Sinfonietta advanced string ensemble, and more!
