String Ensemble Audition Guidelines

Now auditioning members for 2023-24

June String ensemble auditions for the 2023/2024 school year will be conducted in-person. As part of your application, you will select a 30min timeslot from the options available (which differ depending on your instrument). Please be aware however that your actual audition will only last 5-6mins within that timeslot.

You can also select your preferred ensemble as part of the application, and also select if you would like your audition to count towards placement in a chamber group. It should be noted that you may be offered placement in an ensemble other than your preferred one.

Please carefully read the guidelines below before filling out the application form.


Audition Dates 

  • Saturday June 3, 2023: 12-6pm  (String Ensemhles auditions only)
  • Sunday June 4, 2023: 9am-12pm  (Chamber Music Program & String Ensembles auditions)

Audition Requirements 

  • 2 Scales (major and minor) 
  • 1 Piece, or excerpt of a piece lasting no more than 4mins

Sight-Reading Assessment 

  • Sight-Reading assessments will be conducted in-person.  
  • Applicants will be asked to sight-read passages of music. 

Guidelines for Skill Levels 

  • Applicants are expected to be able to play and read music at a level corresponding to their desired ensemble. 
  • The levels below are estimated and should serve as guidelines for applicants as they select their audition materials. They will also inform our conductors as they select materials for sight-reading. 
  • Beginner (Minuetto & Preludio – RCM level 2-5 OR Suzuki book 2-4 
  • Intermediate (Concertante & Intermezzo) – RCM level 6-8 OR Suzuki book 5-7 
  • Advanced (Sinfonietta) – RCM Level 9-ARCT OR Suzuki book 7-10
