William Kuo

Composer William Kuo seeks to create musical performances that transform commonplace experiences into unique moments of discovery. His work combines instrumental composition, signal processing, field recording, and interdisciplinary collaboraton to interrogate performance contexts and listening situations.
William’s work as a composer has received recognition through various nominations and awards. In 2018, he was finalist for the Gaudeamus Award in 2018. In 2021, he was the artist-in-residence for the Taiwan Sound Lab Creators Sound-Off Residency. Additionally, his work geht auf wie eine Blume (2016) was selected for the 2021 ISCM World New Music Days representing the Canadian section. His music has been presented at the C- LAB (Taiwan), Gaudeamus Muziekweek (Netherlands), Bludenzer Tage zeitgemäßer Musik (Austria), Cluster New Music Festival (Canada), Voix Nouvelles (France), and ManiFeste Fes val (France).
As a teacher, his pedagogy centres around creating open-minded, exploratory, and supportive learning environments in which students are encouraged to engage in critical inquiry and creative self-expression. At the VSO School of Music, William offers private instruction in music theory covering the Royal Conservatory of Music curriculum from level 5 to ARCT.
