Registration for Summer camps is now open!
This 5-day introduction to the Suzuki cello method is designed for young beginners and their parents who are ready to begin a joyful and intentional musical journey. Rooted in the time-honoured philosophy of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, this program nurtures foundational musical skills through carefully sequenced, developmentally appropriate activities.
With a small class size, each child receives focused, personalized guidance in a supportive and nurturing environment. This intimate setting allows instructors to truly connect with each student and parent, tailoring instruction to each child’s needs while fostering a sense of community among families.
Children will create their own practice cello and bow—playful yet powerful tools for building coordination, focus, and confidence before transitioning to a real instrument. Throughout the week, musical learning is woven into movement, listening, singing, and play, offering a holistic start to instrumental study.
Over the course of the program, students will:
- Develop correct cello posture and a relaxed, flexible bow hold through age-appropriate physical activities
- Learn to handle the cello and bow with care, patience, and respect—core Suzuki values
- Explore rhythm and phrasing through engaging aural and visual games, including Kodály-inspired flashcard work
- Sing and move to early Suzuki melodies to build musical memory and expressive connection
- Listen daily to high-quality cello recordings to begin shaping their inner sense of tone and phrasing
- Establish home practice habits that are joyful, consistent, and rooted in relationship
The Parent’s Role:
Parent participation is not just encouraged—it’s essential. Each parent becomes an active partner in the learning process, gaining tools to support daily practice, guide listening routines, and create a positive, encouraging musical atmosphere at home. Together, parent and child grow musically, deepening their bond through shared discovery.
About the Suzuki Method:
Created in Japan and embraced worldwide since the 1960s, the Suzuki Method is a unique approach to early childhood music education. Its central beliefs include the following:
- Starting young, when children are naturally receptive to language and music
- Engaged parental support as the child’s first and most consistent teacher
- Individual and group learning, combining personal progress with peer inspiration
- Listening before reading, building a musical ear from the beginning
- The belief that every child can learn, given the right environment and support
Materials needed for this camp: Cereal box and meter stick, for the creation of the model cello
This program offers more than an introduction to the cello—it’s an invitation into a philosophy of learning built on love, respect, and the belief in every child’s potential.
