Registration for Spring term is now open!
These classes are in a HYBRID format, with most instruction given online via Zoom, and some dates when participants come together in person at the VSO School of Music to rehearse and record
This term’s course is a continuation on the ideas presented in Writing Jazz Together 1. Similarly to that course, it will be delivered in a hybrid format via interactive online sessions (with the option to attend in-person) and with some in-person rehearsals working towards a live recorded performance. Professional jazz musician, pianist, and composer Noah Franche-Nolan will help you organize and develop your original compositions for medium sized ensemble.
In this course, students will:
- dive deeper into orchestration/arranging
- explore the wealth of harmonic possibilities with the major, minor, and jazz melodic minor modes.
- compose with exciting and new rhythmic parameters, utilizing concepts such as “odd time meters”, rhythmic ostinatos, and polyrhythms
- gain an appreciation for contemporary jazz composers/artist
- engage in collaborative compositional projects
- rehearse and perform each other’s music in a recorded final live performance
