Azalea Chamber Ensemble

An honours ensemble of up to 12 of the most promising young players in the Lower Mainland will work under the guidance of a team of expert directors on instrumental chamber pieces, learning the historical and musical background of specific regions, learning to mastermusical styles, techniques and performance practice. 

Students will engage with the music on a deep level, considering techniques of improvising qupai (fixed tunes) and learning to listen for heterophonic balance in the ensemble.

The ensemble will be featured in public performacnes through the year and as part of the VSOSoM Showcase Concert on the stage of the Orpheum Theatre on Sunday, June 18, 2017.

Instructors: Dr. Gloria Wong, Zhimin Yu, Zhongxi Wu
Recommended for: Instrumentalists of Chinese music, age 12 and up; at least intermediate level playing and ability to read cipher notation.
Dates and Times: Tuesdays, 6:30-8pm. 8 weeks each term.

Fee: $100 for the year (tuition-assisted fee for successful applicants)
